The Legend of Katy Weerie

Katie Weerie’s Bar is a great place to relax in front of the fire with a coffee, a wee dram or a bar meal. Just like in years gone by, the bar is a welcome gathering place for locals and tourists alike. There is a tree directly opposite the entrance to Katie Weerie’s, known locally as Katie Weerie’s tree. The bar was named after this local “legend”. There are a few stories as to who Katy was…..

“No-one knows for sure who Katy Weerie was. It may be that she was an old lady called Katie Weir and the diminutive “Wearie” was added in typical Scottish fashion. Another theory is that she was a retired cattle drover who habitually sat under the willow tree’s canopy of leaves, leading to the assumption that Katy was “weary”.

Other local legends include the unproved theory that she was a jilted English girl who fled to Scotland to escape her distress. Unfortunately, the original Katy Weerie’s tree blew down in a gale on Guy Fawkes Night 1911, but a sapling taken from the ancient tree was replanted and when it showed signs of age in 1982, yet another fresh cutting was put in place. It still grows on the same spot as its ancestor. “

In days gone by, like many travelers,
Katy Weerie would seek good company,
fine food and quality ales at the WEST PORT HOTEL.
This tradition still remains.

To all travelers from far and wide
A warm welcome awaits inside…..Katy Weerie’s
